Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced ultrasonic testing discipline utilising multi-element piezoelectric probes with microsecond computer-controlled time delays to steer, focus, and sweep acoustic beams across a continuum of angles (Sectorial S-Scan and Electronic Linear Scanning).
Unlike conventional single-element ultrasonic transducers that necessitate frequent probe substitutions and manual raster scanning, PAUT sweeps across complex angles (typically 40° to 70°) from a static probe index position. It generates immediate, high-resolution cross-sectional visualisation of critical weld seams, pipeline girth joints, heavy-wall pressure vessels, and composite structures with exact flaw sizing and characterisation.
Stellar Inspection and Testing NDT deploys calibrated portable multi-channel PAUT instruments paired with high-precision magnetic wheel encoders. PAUT completely supersedes hazardous industrial radiography (RT), eliminating ionising radiation hazards, cordon exclusion zones, and operational plant downtime whilst delivering 100% digital data archiving compliant with ASME Section V, Section VIII, API 1104, and BS EN 13588 standards.
Key Technical Highlights & Capabilities
Electronic Beam Steering & Focusing
Multi-angle sectorial scanning (40°–70°) inspects complete weld volumes from a single transducer index position.
Real-Time S-Scan & C-Scan Imaging
Colour-coded cross-sectional imaging provides immediate flaw characterisation and through-wall height sizing.
Zero Ionising Radiation & No Plant Interruption
Non-radiographic testing executed safely alongside active personnel, completely eliminating exclusion zones.
Code-Compliant Digital Archiving
Complies with ASME Section V / VIII and API 1104 requirements, retaining uncompressed A-scan raw data for audits.
