Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS)
The Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS) is an ultrasonic immersion testing technique universally acknowledged as the definitive quantitative verification tool for heat exchanger, boiler, and air-fin cooler tube bundles. IRIS inspects both ferrous (carbon steel) and non-ferrous (stainless steel, brass, titanium) tubing with absolute wall thickness accuracy.
The IRIS probe comprises a high-frequency ultrasonic transducer aligned along the tube axis, acoustically coupled with a 45-degree rotating mirror turbine propelled by pressurised demineralised water. As the probe traverses the tube, the rotating mirror sweeps the focused ultrasonic beam around the full 360-degree circumference of the tube bore. Ultrasonic echoes returned from the internal and external surfaces of the tube wall are converted into direct, calibrated time-of-flight thickness readings.
IRIS generates real-time cross-sectional B-scan profiles and rectilinear C-scan thickness topography displaying remaining wall thickness to within ±0.05 mm precision. It unequivocally differentiates internal pitting from external corrosion, serving as the benchmark verification tool following preliminary electromagnetic screening.
Key Technical Highlights & Capabilities
Precision Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging
High-frequency ultrasonic immersion transducers quantify wall thickness with an accuracy of ±0.05 mm.
360° Circumferential B & C-Scan Imaging
Continuous rotational scanning delivers true geometric cross-sections, defect contours, and precise pitting profiles.
Ferrous & Non-Ferrous Tubing Versatility
Equally effective across carbon steel, copper alloys, stainless steel, titanium, and nickel alloys.
Fin & Baffle Transparency
Ultrasonic immersion method remains unaffected by external aluminium cooling fins, air gaps, or heavy baffle structures.
